On one level, most of us accept the commonplace dictum that beauty is
in
the eye of the beholder. But in casual conversation and day-to-day
ogling, we tend to act as if beauty is some intrinsic quality of a gifted
minority
of godlike men and women. In my work, I try to take a third approach:
That
beauty is a quality of light. Just as harsh fluorescent lighting can
make
even a good face ghoulish, bathing one's model the right angle and
intensity of light can transform the mundane into the exquisite. By
using
light to its full advantage I try to help myself and my models see
something in ourselves that escapes us in everyday life. In this way I
believe photography can be a tool to develop one's self image by
discovering the best images of one's self.
